Frank Caprio: Obama Can Take His Endorsement and "Shove It"

Updated at 4:20 p.m. ET

Rhode Island's Democratic candidate for governor Frank Caprio on Monday dissed President Obama for refusing to endorse him, telling a talk radio host that Mr. Obama "can take his endorsement and really shove it as far as I'm concerned."

Mr. Obama travels to the Ocean State today for a set of Democratic fundraisers, as well as a visit to a factory. The White House told reporters yesterday, however, that Mr. Obama will not endorse Caprio or any other candidate in the race. Caprio is in a heated contest against Republican John Robitaille and Republican-turned-Independent Lincoln Chafee -- an early Obama ally when he ran for president.

In an interview with WPRO-AM this morning, Caprio criticized the president for fundraising in Rhode Island today, after ignoring the state during the spring's record flooding.

"Now he's coming into Rhode Island treating us like an ATM machine," he said.

A spokesperson for Caprio told the Providence Journal that the campaign doesn't expect the president's non-endorsement to impact the race. However, he said it did benefit Caprio to be invited to join Mr. Obama today at the Woonsocket factory, as well as the Democratic fundraisers.

Chafee spokesman Mike Trainor, meanwhile, told the Providence Journal that the president's decision "is a victory for Linc Chafee."

A Rasmussen poll released Friday showed Chafee with a 7-point lead, though other recent polls give Caprio a slight lead.

A spokesperson for the Rhode Island Republican Party told the Associated Press that Caprio's response to the president's decision was disrespectful and a sign that the Democrat's campaign is in "meltdown mode."

Update: White House Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton told reporters today that Mr. Obama decided to stay out of the Rhode Island gubernatorial race ""Out of respect for his friend Lincoln Chafee," CBS News Senior Political Producer Rob Hendin reports.

In response to Caprio's comment that Mr. Obama could "shove it," Burton acknowledged that "emotions are running high" in the race.

Obama not support a fellow Democrat ?? He'd rather support a RINO turned independent. Proves to me that Obama doesn't cooperate with ANYBODY who disagrees with him no matter what side of the aisle they are on. What a big baby. And he claims the Republicans aren't cooperative? It's apparent that his way or the highway. BTW- Harry, Maggie and weather guy keep your opinions out after an interview (10/26)... John McCain did give the typical politician's answer of avoiding a question; however, don't ADD your remarks at the end of an interview- that's not what you are there for. Your opinions should be kept to yourself. I don't find you do the same with Democratic representatives who dodge a question. I only ask that you be equal in your opinion which you should not be giving in the first place. Harry was especially harsh to Bill O' Reilly (12 days ago)- you continued to call him the "blowvanator" - (SP?). Clearly placing what you think of him. Why don't you speak about on FAILED policies of the President?? How about his sluggish reaction to the BP Oil Spill?? All I heard was crickets.....

Is this a news story worth reporting? When no mention of the Cracker Barrel beating of Tasha Hill, army reservist, was brutally beat and hurled racial slurs, and her offender only got a few months in jail. And we send other people to prison for years, for letting dogs fight, this is a sad day in American justice.

Frank Caprio: Obama Can Take His Endorsement and "Shove It" The Democrat Caprio probably won the election with this comment. Dems like this type of stuff, Chafee just lost 10% of his Dem support.

It is so predictable that some pretend to forget while their exspectation soars, remember it was the Republicans whoe ordered the onslought. Now exspectations have been placed on the curent Commander In Cheif to rise above the ashes, GW Bush(s) had 8 years,8 years to get the country into a mess, and 2 years is justifiable for blows to start flying , is that fair ? Maybe just maybe you should be reexamining where your motivation is deriving from.

One thing about it - by his horrendously failed policies and politics, Barack Obama is making sure that the sun is setting forever on the old, failed ideologies of Socialism / Communism / Marxism / Liberalism. Not the change he intended, but it's a change for the better. We will remember in November.
